2843417: The Epistle to the Romans The Epistle to the Romans
By John Murray / Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.

This is John Murray's commentary that was originally written as a two-volume work for the NICOT, which has been replaced by Douglas Moo's commentary. Due to Murray's lasting value, however, the publisher has kept this commentary in print as an independent volume. This commentary is characterized by careful, in-depth scholarship and spiritual insight. After discussing the authorship, occasion, purpose, and contents of Romans, Murray proceeds with a verse-by-verse exegesis of the text. Also included are 10 appendices in which issues such as the meaning of justification, the relation of Isaiah 53:11 to the message of Romans, Karl Barth on Romans 5, and other subjects in Romans are discussed. This work will benefit scholars, pastors, and students in their efforts to understand what is perhaps Paul's most profound writing. John Murray was born in Scotland, was educated in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Princeton, and spent most of his career teaching systematic theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

17080: Romans, Geneva Commentary Series Romans, Geneva Commentary Series
By Robert Haldane / Banner Of Truth

Robert Haldane's Exposition of Romans, both in its contents and in the power of its influence, stands among the foremost of the many treatments of this epistle. Haldane writes both to instruct and to move; he is both an expositor and a preacher, and while he upholds orthodoxy it is not as an end in itself, it must lead to love and life. This exposition has inspired many others to enter more deeply into that same spirit. As a commentary, Thomas Chalmers 'strongly recommended it'; Spurgeon put it in the front rank; and, more recently, Martyn Lloyd-Jones owed 'much profit and pleasure' to it, characterising its contents as unsurpassed in 'warmth of spirit' and 'practical application'. Haldane was a wealthy descendant of Scottish nobility who devoted his wealth and talents to the spread of the gospel after his conversion during the French Revolution.

8923: Romans, Geneva Series of Commentaries Romans, Geneva Series of Commentaries
By Charles Hodge / Banner Of Truth

Charles Hodge, who for fifty-six years--from 1822 to 1878-- lectured on the Pauline Epistles at Princeton Theological Seminary, issued the final version of his commentary on Ro- mans in 1864. It was at once recognized as belonging to the number of the few truly great works on this Epistle and that verdict has been upheld by Christian leaders down to the pre- sent day. Particularly noteworthy is the commendation which the work has received from the preachers of the gospel.

5524036: Romans Romans
By Robert Rogland / P & R Publishing

To help readers master Paul's epistle to the Romans, Rogland has written this valuable study manual. Thorough yet vivid and uncluttered by technical jargon, it offers those with limited background the guidance they need to undertake a rewarding study of Paul's letter. Study questions are followed by commentary, with application to life, work and worship. Teachers and leaders will value the answer key to the study questions; pastors and evangelists will find the outline of the gospel in Romans helpful in training others in soul winning; and almost every reader will profit from the indexes of themes and topics, and the suggestions for further study.

1514677: Romans, Exposition of Chapter 1: The Gospel of God Romans, Exposition of Chapter 1: The Gospel of God
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

All over the world, in diverse situations, are to be found Christian men and women who owe a debt to the ministry of Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, who for 30 years was the minister of Westminster Chapel, London. His longest series of expositions (1955-1968) was on this the greatest of New Testament Epistles.

No New Testament Epistle is more foundational to the Christian faith than Romans, and no chapter in Romans more basic than its first chapter. To very few chapters did Dr. Lloyd-Jones give more thought or more emphasis. He viewed it as the supreme demonstration of the necessity for the gospel, the announcement of divine truths worthy of the attention of the whole world.

1515452: Romans 2:1-3:20: The Righteous Judgment of God Romans 2:1-3:20: The Righteous Judgment of God
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

Dr. Lloyd-Jones follows Paul's massive indictment against sin; yet he never loses sight of the function that chapter 2 is meant to serve in the context of the whole letter. Here he unfolds Paul's analysis of the spiritual sickness of the human heart, its deceitfulness and rebellion against God, and its sinister use of religion as a defense mechanism against true conviction of sin. Like Martin Luther, he recognizes that the apostle's plucking up, pulling down and destroying of self-righteousness is intended to clear the way for planting Christ and salvation in our hearts.

510507: Romans 5: Assurance Romans 5: Assurance
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

Dr. Lloyd-Jones saw Romans 5 as a central chapter in the entire letter. Here is Paul's exposition of the blessings of justification by faith; but here too, the cosmic roots of our salvation are traced back to Christ. As the Last Adam he has undone all that was twisted, and reversed for his people all that was lost, by the first Adam's sin and fall. Where sin abounded, grace has super-abounded! The triumphant note that is sounded by the apostle Paul in Romans 5 - that grace reigns through Christ - was one of the leading characteristics of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones' entire ministry. In his exposition of Romans Chapter 5, he explains how the biblical teaching puts a song of praise on the lips of God's people and assures them of the riches of God's grace. Simultaneously moving and mind stretching, Romans: Assurance merits a place among the great classics of biblical exposition.

1511589: Romans 6: The New Man Romans 6: The New Man
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones provides clear and wise exposition of one of the most widely misunderstood chapters in the New Testament. His own struggle to understand Romans is made clear in the preface, where he relates the story of a preacher who asked him when he would preach a series on Romans. "When I have really understood chapter 6," was Lloyd-Jones immediate reply. In this volume, he relates the understanding of chapter 6 that he eventually came to; an understanding that will benefit all who seek to interpret this important chapter.

1512070: Romans 8:5-17: The Sons of God Romans 8:5-17: The Sons of God
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

This volume on Romans 8:5-17 by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones deals with momentous questions such as the doctrine of sanctification and the baptism with the Holy Spirit. It, therefore, deals with matters which are not only crucial in the living of the Christian life, but also highly controversial. According to Lloyd-Jones, he endeavours to compare Scripture with Scripture and to state fairly views which he felt compelled to reject.

512313: Romans 8:17-39: The Final Perseverance of the Saints Romans 8:17-39: The Final Perseverance of the Saints
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

"Little needs to be said by way of introduction to this volume. The verses considered in it are generally agreed to be one of the sublimest portions of scripture.

In it the Apostle brings his argument concerning assurance of salvation to a grand climax. The way in which he advances surely from argument to argument, piling one upon another, is astonishing, and constitutes the supreme example of inspired logic. In doing so he brings us face to face with the fundamental theme of the Bible - God's plan and purpose of redemption conceived before time and the foundation of the world, and spanning the whole of human history from the original creation to the final glory.

What is perhaps most astonishing of all is that all this was done out of a primary pastoral concern, the Apostle's main object being to comfort and to help those early Christians in Rome who were enduring what he calls 'the sufferings of this present time'.

As is characteristic of all Paul's letters, doctrine and practical application are intertwined, reminding us that doctrine and theology should never be treated in isolation or regarded as an academic subject. The only comfort and consolation the Apostle has to offer his readers is based on doctrine. Every step and detail matters, and is of crucial importance in the development of the grand argument. To set the details and the broad principles in opposition is a sign of failure to understand the Apostle's method.

It is only as we follow him 'with the eyes of our own understanding being enlightened' that we shall be able to understand, and to be 'more than conquerors' face to face with the sufferings of our own times. God grant that these expositions may help many in that respect!"---from the author's Preface.

1515797: Romans: God's Sovereign Purpose Romans: God's Sovereign Purpose
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

In God's Sovereign Purpose, Dr. Lloyd-Jones continues his exposition of the book of Romans with a characteristically thorough treatment of Romans 9. As a physician of souls Dr. Lloyd-Jones recognized only too well the common propensity to read Scripture in the light of your own questions and often, consequently, to miss the "big picture". He insists that his hearers and readers follow through the apostle Paul's teaching from beginning to end. With Augustine, Dr. Lloyd-Jones summons us before the majestic sovereignty of God, to 'humility, humility, humility'.

1517374: Romans 10: Saving Faith Romans 10: Saving Faith
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

Why do religious people not believe the gospel? What is involved in truly believing it? What about those who have never even heard the gospel? Who should tell them about it? These are just a few questions that this volume of sermons on Romans 10 provides answers to. 400 pages from Banner of Truth.

51748X: Romans 11: To God's Glory Romans 11: To God's Glory
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

In these sermons we see that the truths expressed by the Apostle Paul are not only fitting conclusions to Romans 9-11, and indeed to the preceding chapters as well, but are also an interpretative key to the past and to the future. They explain the history of Israel in the Old Testament and that of the Jews and the church in the New, while also anticipating the future of the Jewish people in the Christian church.

517943: Romans 12: Christian Conduct Romans 12: Christian Conduct
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

Lloyd-Jones considered the Book of Romans the greatest doctrinal masterpiece ever written. But the concluding chapters of Paul's epistle focus largely on matters of practical application. Stemming from a historic study in post-WWII London's Westminster Chapel, this sermon series explores how "new life" transforms daily living. Special attention is paid to the subject of spiritual gifts. 513 pages, softcover from Banner of Truth.

18249: Romans 13: Life in Two Kingdoms Romans 13: Life in Two Kingdoms
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

Christians have been brought, by faith in Christ, into the kingdom of God, but they are still citizens of an earthly kingdom. How does life in one kingdom connect with life in the other? Does obedience to God somehow exempt Christians from obedience to earthly rulers? And what of the vexed question of the relationship of church and state?

Insisting that these questions have been of more than theoretical interest throughout church history, Dr. Lloyd-Jones examines the function of government, the Christian's attitude to war and revolution, the lordship of Christ over church and state, the Christian's relationship to the law of God, the meaning of loving one's neighbor, and many related topics.

518494: Romans 14:1-17: Liberty and Conscience Romans 14:1-17: Liberty and Conscience
By D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones / Banner Of Truth

All Christians have been made free by Christ (John 8:36), but not all have an equally strong grasp of what this means in practice. Some are weakened by scruples about things which are strictly neither right nor wrong, while others assert their liberty in a way which risks doing violence to the consciences of the weak. It was this situation which the Apostle Paul addressed in Romans 14. He insisted that, while Christian liberty was to be maintained, it was never to be asserted in such a way as to hurt the consciences of others, or to embolden them to do what they believed to be wrong. In this the last volume of the series, Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains the implications of this issue for the church today. The fitting conclusion of his exposition of Romans is that true Christianity is not, in the end, concerned with such matters as what may be eaten or what days should be observed, but with divine kingdom, characterized by inward righteousness, peace and joy.

By Martin Luther, translated by J. Theodore Mueller / Kregel Publications

251004: A Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans A Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans
By William G.T. Shedd / Solid Ground Christian Books

First published in 1879, this classic Reformed Commentary has been reprinted again and again through the years. It is an outstanding contribution to the study of the Epistle that has turned the world upside-down. 442 Pages. Softcover from Solid Ground Christian Books.

William Greenough Thayer Shedd (1820-1894) was both a congregational and, later, a Presbyterian pastor. He has a distinguished career as a Professor of English Literature prior to his work at the theological seminaries of Auburn, Andover, and finally at Union Seminary.

"When studying Romans, I usually reach for Shedd first. Highly valued in past generations, Shedd's careful treatment of the original text is succinct and yet richly suggestive of profitable lines of exposition. A must have for serious study of Paul's most important letter." Dr. Robert P. Martin, Pastor, Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle, Washington, Editor, Reformed Baptist Theological Review

"Believing that the Epistle to the Romans is 'an inspired system of theology,' Shedd sought to give particular attention to the great doctrines of original sin in chapter 5, indwelling sin in chapters 7 and 8, and election and reprobation in chapters 9, 10 and 11. The merit of Shedd's commentary is found in his fresh examination of the Greek text, combined with an appreciative interaction with the best of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Reformed exegesis, and his abiding commitment to the traditional Reformed concept that the intended fruit of exegesis is a systematic statement of religious truth." Rev. Sherman Isbell.
